But the thing nobody really talks about is this, that feeling you’re waiting for? You can have it on any ordinary day. You just have to know what actually gives it to you.

Specifically. The exact things that make an everyday life feel good. The morning that starts right. A specific scent for your home. The meal you make on autopilot that always hits. The rituals so embedded in a day that removing them would make it feel off.

Most people have never actually stopped to make that list. They know what they like in theory but they’ve never really thought about it, what are the specific things that make an ordinary day feel like something?

Because once you know what’s on that list, you stop leaving it to chance. You just go and have it. Wherever you are, whatever the day looks like.

Most people know what they want from life in broad terms.

They want to be happier. Healthier. More fulfilled. More present. More connected.

But ask someone what makes an ordinary day feel good and the answers suddenly become much harder. Not because they don’t know, but because they’ve never really paid attention.

The strange thing is that a good life is rarely made up of big things. It’s made up of things so small we stop noticing them. The coffee shop you always choose, the bowl you always reach for, the smell of clean sheets, the meal you know how to make without checking a recipe.

When people imagine their dream life, they often picture a destination. A city. A house. A relationship. A version of themselves.

But if you zoom in, most of what makes that imagined life appealing is actually hidden in the details.

It’s the morning routine.

It’s the neighbourhood walk.

It’s the flowers on the kitchen counter.

It’s knowing where you buy your bread.

It’s having a favourite seat at the dinner table.

It’s the feeling of your home at 7pm.

The good news is that most of these things don’t require a different life. They require paying attention.

So make the list. Not the aspirational list.

The evidence list.

The list of things that have already proven themselves.

The things that consistently make a day better.

Maybe it looks something like this:

• A croissant still warm from the bakery

• Walking somewhere instead of taking transport

• A bed made before 9am

• Reading in the bath

• The smell of basil plants in the kitchen

• A candle you only light in the evening

• Iced coffee in a proper glass

The specifics don’t matter. What matters is knowing your own.

Because once you have the list, you stop treating a good day like luck.

How to actually have it

Once you start paying attention, you’ll notice something surprising. The people who seem to have beautiful lives are often just very good collectors. Not of things, but of evidence. They notice what works and keep returning to it. They remember the cafe they loved, save the recipe they’ll make again, write down the wine they want to buy next time, return to the beach, repeat the dinner party, rebuy the flowers.

They don’t leave the things they enjoy up to memory.

They collect evidence.

That’s why I think everyone should have some version of a life list. A note in your phone, a page in a journal, a document you keep returning to. Whenever something makes a day noticeably better, add it. Whenever you leave somewhere thinking, I want more of this in my life, write it down.

The truth is that most people spend years trying to create a life they enjoy without ever studying the moments they already enjoy. When you feel unexpectedly happy, get curious. What caused it? Who were you with? What were you doing? What were you eating? What music was playing? What time of day was it? What about that moment made it feel different from all the others?

Your life leaves clues constantly.

A restaurant you immediately want to return to. A meal you never get tired of making. A candle you keep rebuying. A neighbourhood that always puts you in a good mood. A friend you leave feeling better after seeing. An object in your home that makes you smile every time you notice it.

Those clues are worth keeping.

Because eventually you’ll realise that a beautiful life isn’t built from scratch. It’s assembled slowly through accumulation. A favourite place a ritual you look forward to, ameal you know by heart, people you genuinely enjoy being around. Small pleasures that repeatedly prove themselves.

Most of the things that make life feel good are already available to you.

What struck me most was how much the outfits I noticed felt like extensions of my own style, or maybe the style I want to lean into more. It reminded me that the looks we gravitate toward often mirror something about ourselves: the cuts we crave, the silhouettes we feel at home in, the pieces that seem to define a certain kind of chic. Recently, I’ve been testing and making my own chocolate flavours, inspired by the ones you’d find tucked near the checkout at a well-designed grocery. This reminded me of a post I wrote earlier this year, where I listed “visiting a high-end grocery store” as an actual activity. So many of you loved that line. And I get it, something about being in a store that treats snacks like artefacts and pantry goods like rare perfume feels both indulgent and deeply satisfying.

This post is a little more imaginative than usual, not a list of where to go or what to buy, but more of a mental exercise. A brain jog. A store I wish existed, or maybe half-exists in a few places, stitched together from what I’ve seen, what I’d stock, and what I’d love to stumble across on a random Wednesday.

If I could build my own grocery store from scratch, layout, music, packaging, the products, even the checkout experience, what would it look like? Not just from a design perspective, but as a concept. Something that makes you want to stay longer. A store that feels like a good mood. The perfect solo activity.

Think of this as a creative palette cleanser. A fun scroll, maybe something to read during your breakfast, your lunch break, right before bed, or while you’re sipping something.

Here’s the walkthrough.

Entry

• Water station with rotating infusions:

  • Cucumber

  • Hibiscus + goji

  • Lemon

• A small in-store noticeboard next to the door pinned with upcoming product drops, or suggestions from regulars (“please bring back the guava chips”)

• A digital screen near the baskets but instead of ads, it rotates producer spotlights: seaweed farmers in Dalian, tofu makers in Kyoto, sesame harvests from Myanmar

• A rack with two types of carts: mini mesh baskets on wheels and hand-carried bamboo trays

  • The baskets are mesh and matte black with bamboo handles

The Bakery

• Baked goods are placed, not stacked, one row of each, restocked slowly throughout the day instead of overfilled in the morning

  • Red bean butter cookie sandwiches

  • Peanut butter caramel shortbread

  • Toasted rice scones

• A flat wooden basket holds the “try before 12pm” breads limited-run

• The focaccia is cut into slabs and sold by weight, topped with shiso, fermented onion, or wasabi greens

• Seasonal sourdough loaves

  • Mulberry buckwheat

  • Pear barley

  • Walnut fig

• A short bar of house spreads

  • Kinako butter

  • Honey chestnut paste

This is the first aisle you actually want to linger in. Every item feels like it was chosen by someone with food science degree.

• Popcorn that comes in flavours like:

• Cereal isn’t boxed, it’s in soft refill pouches with wide-mouth tops so you can pour straight into your jar. Flavours include:

• Instead of candy bars at checkout, a hidden drawer below the checkout counter with a felt lining, it slides open to reveal one-bite treats:

  • Black garlic peanut brittle

  • Salted caramel squares

  • Chili mango slivers

  • Dried pineapple “jerky” with lime

  • Fermented plum and sesame brittle

• Paper bags are folded into perfect rectangles, sealed with washi tape or a seasonal sticker (autumn: persimmon, winter: snow fungus, spring: plum blossom)

• A rotating tray of “thank you” samples you can grab, maybe a 10g packet of rice seasoning, a dried fig with honey glaze, or a skincare sachet

That’s the store!

I know it doesn’t exist, not yet, anyway but it’s been sitting in my head for a while. A place that feels like a treat even if you’re just buying rice. Where everything feels a bit too beautiful to eat, but you eat it anyway.

Writing this wasn’t just for fun (although it was so fun). It made me think about what I actually reach for, what kind of shopping experience makes me feel good, and how much design and detail matters, even in the smallest everyday choices.

The Jacket Hierarchy

Outerwear is where you get strategic. Some jackets are just for show, some are made for wind-blocking, and some are warm enough to carry the whole outfit. The trick is knowing when to swap one for the other. Early in the month? Trench season. A structured one gives polish to basically anything, from low-waisted jeans to a hoodie-skirt combo. Warm day? And on days where you still need a little weight but want to keep it fun, a blazer, oversized, cropped, linen, whatever steps in. Bottom Half = Play with Proportions

Transitional dressing is all about balance, when the top half of your outfit is layered up and figuring itself out, the bottom half is where you get to have fun. Think slouchy trousers with a baby tee, mini skirts with big bomber jackets or a plain oversized hoodie, culottes with a knee-high boot moment. Or your classic jeans with ballet flats and a chunky knit. It’s an easy way to keep your outfit feeling fresh without overthinking it. Play around with contrast, fitted up top, roomy on the bottom (or the opposite). Belts, cuffs, slits, and hemlines all come into play here. When the weather can’t decide, your outfit doesn’t have to either, just let the proportions do the talking.

The Tights Trick

Tights with lighter pieces, one of the most underrated combos for transitional dressing. It’s unexpected in the best way. Everyone’s quick to pair tights with chunky knits or heavier textures, but throwing them on under something soft and floaty instantly dresses it up while still keeping things practical for cooler days. Another reason why tights with lighter pieces is such a fun style experiment, I’ve never been the biggest fan of sheer clothing, I love the look, but wearing it has always felt a little intimidating. That said, pairing lighter, airier pieces (even the sheer ones you’ve been unsure about) with tights makes the whole thing feel a bit more grounded and honestly, more wearable. A lacy skirt or silky slip with semi-opaque black or brown tights, a boxy tee or light cardigan thrown on top, and some buckled ballet flats or loafers, the kind of styling move that quietly makes everything feel more put-together.

There’s a sweet spot in footwear right now. All footwear is fair game right now (except maybe sandals).
