I’ve always said my favourite days of the week are Thursdays and Sundays. Thursday has that “almost there” energy, where things feel exciting for no real reason. And Sunday? Sunday is the exhale. If I could be a day of the week, I’d choose Sunday.
I like Sundays because I can stay in bed for as long as I want and not feel bad about it. I can make pancakes at 1pm. I can wear my pjs around the house all day. I can call my call my long-distance friends, clean out my skincare drawer, or do absolutely nothing and still feel like I had a good day.
There’s no pressure to go out, but if I do, it’s for something simple like picking up a croissant or standing in my friend's kitchen while she makes tea. Some Sundays feel like skincare and changing your sheets. Others feel like eating cake out of the container and never taking your robe off. Both are valid. Both are iconic.
This post isn’t really a guide, and it’s definitely not a routine. It’s just a list of very Sunday-ish things. Stuff I do, or want to do, or keep meaning to do. The kind of things that make me love this day for what it is. Just a nice day to exist.
The Sunday Breakfast

Sundays are for the breakfasts you think about mid-week and never make. I’m a breakfast person through and through. French toast with a fruity compote, a decadent pancake stack, soft scrambled eggs with thick slices of toast from the bakery. It’s always something warm. Always eaten in pyjamas. Sometimes in bed, sometimes standing at the bench. Or actually out at your favourite cafe for some eggs Benedict. There’s no structure to it. Just make whatever you feel like, go wherever you feel like, when you feel like it. Sometimes it’s sweet, sometimes it’s savoury, sometimes it’s both. Maybe a frothy coffee on the side. Something playing in the background so it doesn’t feel like a routine.
Slow Mornings

Sundays are made for waking up without an alarm and taking your time actually getting out of bed. A proper sleep-in without guilt. A morning that isn’t dictated by to-do lists or pressure to jump up early or start a morning routine. Maybe that means scrolling on your phone for a bit or lying there thinking about the day ahead without stressing about it. When it’s time to get ready, there’s no rush. Again, getting ready isn’t a routine today, skincare gets done properly because there’s time, you might try on three outfits before landing on your old hoodie, sometimes it’s just about feeling put together for yourself after a week that probably asked for too much. This slow, no-pressure getting-ready process is what makes Sundays feel different. No schedules, no expectations, just the simple joy of moving through the morning on your own terms.

Farmers Market

Sundays are for walking through the farmers market even if there’s nothing needed, even if the fridge is already full. Showing up with a coffee in hand, weaving through the crowds. The same stalls are always there. The fruit stand with those tiny paper sample cups. Dogs tied loosely to poles. The sourdough table where the line’s always too long. The man selling dips, shouting about his beetroot hummus. Sometimes it’s just about being there, it’s just one of those things that makes the morning feel more complete, like time has passed in a nice way. Noticing the bags people carry, standing in front of the pastry display for ten minutes before deciding on a croissant that gets eaten half on the spot, half on the walk home. Letting the morning exist around you, where the air smells like coffee and baked goods and everyone seems to be in a good mood.

Baking a Nostalgic Treat (and sharing it)

Sundays and baking go hand in hand. Maybe it’s something simple that reminds you of childhood, a lolly cake, a Boston bun with too much pink icing. It gives the afternoon some shape when there’s nothing else planned. It fills the house with warmth. It keeps your hands busy without needing much thought. It’s calm and quiet in a way the rest of the week sometimes rarely is. I love the feeling of putting something in the oven and knowing you’ll come back to it later, taking it out and letting it cool on the bench, having a treat for the rest of the week ahead.
Or once it’s done, wrap some up and go see someone. Bring it to your family and stay for an hour. Sit on the couch. Eat a piece together in the kitchen. If home’s further away, pack a few slices and drop them off to a friend. A Sunday kind of delivery.

Watching a Comfort Movie or Show
Sundays are for putting on something easy. It could be a show you’ve already watched a dozen times, a movie you know by heart, the feeling of having something familiar there with you, to lighten your mood, or unwind. Maybe it’s a cooking show while you tidy up, or a film you like to have on while you’re stretched out on the couch or bed with a blanket, a snack nearby, the curtains half drawn. Comfort watching never needs to be justified. To press play on a familiar comfort because it matches the mood of doing nothing. Creating a cosy atmosphere where it makes the late afternoon feel less like the weekend is ending, and more like the best part of it is still happening.

Comfort Hobbies

Sundays are for pulling out the things you never get around to during the week. Picking up a half-finished or starting a new knitting project and doing a few rows while something plays in the background. Doodling in the margins of a notebook. Flicking through an old magazine and tearing out pages you like. Pulling out a book you’ve started but haven’t touched in days and reading one chapter. These are the kinds of things that fall to the side during the week, but make sense again on a Sunday. Turning off your brain for a bit and letting the afternoon settle into a different kind of pace. There’s comfort in the rhythm, in the texture, in doing something just for the feeling of it. The feeling of making time for something quiet, even if you don’t get very far. Some Sundays that means picking up where you left off. Other times it’s starting from scratch. Either way, it’s about making space for the small things that don’t usually get time.
Everything Shower

Sundays are for the kind of shower you actually plan your afternoon around. Not a quick rinse, not just shampoo and out. The full thing. A proper, full reset. The one where you exfoliate, shave, wash your hair, leave a treatment in, maybe do a mask after. You put on a playlist or a podcast. You take your time. The whole bathroom gets steamy, your towel’s clean, extra soft. Fresh pyjamas after. Maybe body oil, then thick body lotion to lock it all in. Hair wrapped up in a towel while you wander around the house. If the week felt chaotic, this is the part that makes you feel like a human again. A nice way to land back in your body, a nice reset before Monday starts asking for too much again.

Go to Bed Early

Sundays are for going to bed early without making it a whole thing. No “starting the week strong” energy, no need to journal or reflect or set intentions. Just getting into bed a little earlier than usual, because you can, because it feels good. Fresh sheets if you remembered. A cup of tea if you feel like one. Winding down without trying to squeeze in anything else. No urge to scroll until midnight, no pressure to be productive until the last second of the weekend. The week will start when it starts. There’s nothing else that needs doing. Sunday ends with rest.

There’s no one way to spend a Sunday. Some weekends feel full and some feel empty. But your version of comfort can make a day feel like time was well spent. It’s not getting organised or starting the week strong. It’s not about being productive or intentional or any of those words that get thrown around too much. Give yourself the kind of day that make Sunday feel like Sunday, not a countdown to Monday.
I’d love every Sunday to look like this.
